RUDY GAY: Still Making Moves!

Written by McCarroll Nole

GARY BROOKS"Big Truck" Brings It All Home

by McCarroll Nole, MD AAU

RUDY "BIG TRUCK" GAY
, a 17-season NBA standout, retired in 2024. Drafted in the 8th round by the Houston Rockets in 2006, the 6’8” small/power forward played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Toronto Raptors, Sacramento Kings, and San Antonio Spurs before playing his last stint with the Utah Jazz. He is a FIBA World Cup Champion and winner of the NBA Cares Community Assist Award for outstanding efforts in the community and for his philanthropic and charitable work. After retirement, he returned to Baltimore where he grew up and where he played local AAU basketball for legendary Cecil Kirk coach Athony Lewis and where he graduated from Archbishop Spalding High school before attending the University of Connecticut.

Rudy has continued contributing to his community by empowering youth through his Flight 22 Foundation, which includes building playgrounds to provide safe recreational spaces for children, supporting entrepreneurship education in 22 Baltimore high schools, hosting the “Rudy Gay Flight 22 Classic,” a tournament providing local AAU teams (boys 2nd through 7th grade) opportunities to showcase their talents, and opening his Pickup USA Fitness gym to offer training and a positive environment to the community.

We caught up with Rudy at the annual AAU Maryland District 4th and 5th grade Tournament which was held at Dundalk Community College on April 25 and 26. He was there to coach his sons (see photo).

We are delighted that Rudy will deliver the keynote address at our annual awards banquet in November. The exact date will be announced soon!

Baltimore Youth Basketball Team Wins National Championship in Orlando

Written by Administrator

2025 TEAM MELO

by LEXI HARPSTER | FOX45 NEWS (foxbaltimore.com) | July 14th 2025 at 2:08 PM

BALTIMORE (WBFF) — Team Melo's first-grade basketball team has achieved a remarkable accomplishment by winning the National World Championship in Orlando, Florida.

This victory is a significant milestone in the AAU basketball community.

The young athletes, who have been playing together since they were 4 years old, have honed their skills under the guidance of Coach Chase, Coach Mel, and Coach Troy Parker Jr., also known as Coach TP. Coach TP is recognized as one of the most respected and accomplished youth trainers in the DMV area.

"This championship is the epitome of what true grassroots development looks like at the elementary level," said Coach TP. "It's a shining example of what’s possible when youth sports is done the right way."

The team's success is attributed to a system focused on long-term development rather than short-term wins, involving consistent training, development leagues, and mentorship.

This achievement is a proud moment not only for the young athletes and their families but also for the entire Baltimore community.
