Receives 2024 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

In September 2023, Coach Rohan Phipps suffered a traumatic brain injury that led to an extended hospital stay of over six weeks. Coach Rohan has faced many challenges in his life, but this near-death experience was one of the worst. Not only was he separated from his loved ones, but this injury also meant being separated from his beloved team, the Southern Sprinters. For someone who has dedicated his life to mentoring, coaching, and inspiring young athletes, this separation was excruciating.

Yet, even while facing such immense hardship, his thoughts remained with his team and his passion for coaching.

Receives 2023 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

This year’s recipient of the overcoming adversity award has volunteered with Maryland District AAU, the Madison Square Buccaneers, and the Baltimore Stars AAU coalition for more than 25 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the university of Maryland college park and a Master’s Degree from Morgan State University. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority incorporated. and she is currently a Development Consultant with the State of Maryland Community Development Administration.

After being diagnosed with breast cancer, she endured three related surgeries. soon after her first surgery, she volunteered at the 2022 AAU World Basketball Championships at McDaniel College.

Receives 2021 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

Beverley Vincent, is truly a dedicated and committed AAU member. She has fully served and promoted the Amateur Athletic Union movement.

Beverley currently serves the Maryland District AAU as the Registrar and Boys Basketball Tournament Assistant Commissioner. Beverly served the AAU District as assistant commissioner in Boys Basketball under Mcarroll Nole and later became the commissioner for the 5 under boys basketball team.

Beverley was appointed on the Finance Committee and also served on the National Boys Basketball 8u team. Beverley served as the chairperson for the District Election Chairperson. Beverley is currently the Registrar for the Maryland AAU District.

Receives 2021 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

Hansberry Moore, a native Baltimorean is a dedicated and committed volunteer with the Maryland District AAU. Hansberry has served in the role of Maryland District assistant commissioner, Sports Director for Baseball and Softball.

He has attended several AAU National Conventions and the leadership conferences. In addition to his volunteer work with AAU, Hansberry was affiliated with Northwood Baseball League for nearly twenty years where he held positions of Board Member and Coach.

Hansberry was employed with Baltimore City Health Department (BCHD) Operations Safe Kids. He retired from BCHD with nearly 20 years of service. Prior to his employment with BCHD, Hansberry was employed with the Charles Hickey School for Boys. He is currently employed as a Recreation Assistant with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks.

Receives 2021 MD AAU’s “Overcoming Adversity” Award

This year’s recipient has more than 30 years mentoring and coaching youth and young adults. For more than 20 years, he has amassed several city’s state and national championships and honors as a Pop-Warner, Semi-Pro and High School football Coach. He is a AAU Boys Basketball Tournament Assistant, AAU Football Sports Director, former basketball official, life guard, umpire, baseball player and all around sport.

In 2012, when diagnosed with Asbestosis, he became dependent on oxygen. His abilities were limited; however, he continued his passion to coach and mentor young men while being supported by family and friends. As his lung disease progressed, he medically retired from the Housing Authority of Baltimore City with more than 30 years of service.
